What are the Top Universities for Dental Qualifications in the UK?
If you are eager to become a dentist and are mulling over which UK universities you should apply to for working towards that coveted dental qualification, you could be excused for feeling indecisive. Which institutions most warrant your attention from an academic point of view? Also, how do they differ in terms of the kind of student life they offer? These can be tricky questions to answer, but we have done our best to do so with this article.
Glasgow
When the independent The Complete University Guide compiled its latest rankings of the UK’s best universities for dentistry, it handed Glasgow the premier position. It’s the only university to have achieved an overall score of 100 in these rankings for 2017 – and, unsurprisingly, it also commands the highest entry standards. The city is Scotland’s largest, so you’ll doubtless find no shortage of attractions to enjoy during your time there.
Manchester
Manchester reached second place in The Complete University Guide’s list – it actually jumped from fourth position, where it was in the 2016 rankings. The university has a particularly impressive research profile in the dentistry field, so it isn’t an exaggeration to say that studying there could enable you to benefit from some of the UK’s leading dentistry experts. The city itself is also just across the sea from our base near Belfast; so, if you get work in a Manchester dental practice, we will be able to send over supplies very quickly.
Queen Mary, University of London
Simply the prospect of spending your student years in the hugely cosmopolitan British capital could be enough to have you rushing to prepare your application to Queen Mary! Of course, another advantage of studying in London is having loads of fantastic resources right on your doorstep. Adding to that, Queen Mary’s prowess in dentistry research is nearly as strong as Manchester’s, according to The Complete University Guide.
Newcastle
If you tend to associate the city of Newcastle only with Newcastle Brown Ale and the Angel of the North, you need to look again: it’s also got one of the UK’s most prestigious universities housing one of the country’s top dentistry faculties. Apparently, this department has fallen slightly from third to fourth position in The Complete University Guide’s rankings, but it remains hugely respected – and the draw of studying in an awe-inspiring city for theatre and art in particular could be too strong to resist.
King’s College London
Naturally, what we’ve earlier enthused about the appeal of London as a student city applies here, too. King’s College London has made an impressive leap from ninth to fifth position in The Complete University Guide’s list; however, the entry standards are low compared to those of the other top institutions we’ve mentioned, so it could be worth sending off an application and trying your luck before those entry standards go higher. The dentistry department of King’s College London also fares respectably in the area of research. Whichever universities you apply for, we wish you the very best luck.
